Reason For Planting Trees In Urban Areas
- Urban Tree Canopy Benefits — Although known as the 'Park City,' Bridgeport, Connecticut's majority-minority, low-income communities, especially on the eastern side, lack adequate tree coverage. Summer surface temperatures reach 100+° Fahrenheit. Some families cannot afford electricity bills. Greenspace is at a premium. The city has the lowest tree canopy in the state (5% on the east side), threatened by damaging storms and emerald ash borer. Lack of trees diminishes air quality, contributing to respiratory conditions like asthma, particularly in children. However, residents and local leaders like Christina Smith, President & CEO of Groundwork Bridgeport, are working together to rebuild the social fabric, health, and vitality of the area through community tree planting.
