Garbage, Cleanliness, and Sanitation Update
Dear Residents:
The City of Pottsville is committed to maintaining clean, safe, and sanitary neighborhoods for everyone who lives, works, and visits our community. Keeping our neighborhoods clean is a shared responsibility, and we are asking residents to take an active role in maintaining the appearance and cleanliness of their properties and surrounding areas.
Recently, the City has observed instances of garbage being left outside of appropriate trash cans or roll-off receptacles. Unsecured garbage and trash bags can attract rats, insects, and other vermin and can create unsanitary conditions.
Please remember the following City requirements:
• All household garbage must be stored in trash cans or roll-off toters with tight-fitting lids.
• Residents must have an adequate number of containers to properly hold the garbage generated by their household.
• Roll-off toters may be rented through the City's Tax Office for an additional $10.50 per quarter on your bill, or purchased individually.
• Garbage may not be placed at the curb before 5:00 PM on the day before collection.
• Trash cans and other receptacles should be removed from the curb as soon as possible after collection and may not remain on the sidewalk indefinitely.
The City is taking a more proactive approach to code enforcement in an effort to make Pottsville healthier, safer, and more enjoyable for everyone. However, enforcement alone cannot keep our neighborhoods clean.
We are asking residents to take ownership of their neighborhoods. Please take a few minutes to look around your property and the area immediately surrounding it. Secure loose garbage, pick up litter, keep trash properly contained, and make sure your property is ready for collection on the appropriate day. We also encourage residents to respectfully remind friends, family members, and neighbors about the importance of properly handling and storing trash. If you observe an ongoing problem that cannot be resolved through voluntary cooperation, please contact City Hall at (570) 622-1234 so that we can work to address it.
Our preference is always to see residents and neighborhoods work together to correct problems before enforcement action becomes necessary. The City will issue citations when appropriate, but our ultimate goal is voluntary compliance, neighborhood pride, and residents working together to keep Pottsville clean.
